Win3k Firewall Configutation, How Do I get it setup?2/25/2005 8:42:23 PM

I have a Win3k Standard Edition Server hosted through a co-location that is not physically accessible to me. It has 2 network adapters and in total 3 public IP's and one internal. We host a variety of sites on this server and I would like to impliment a firewall to protect or limit access to the few ports I want open.


The method I use to activate the firewall is basic.

I log in to the server through remote desktop (Terminal Services)
I goto my network Connections
Right CLick network adapter, then goto properties
I click the Advanced Tab
select The Protect my computer checkbox
then click advanced.
I make sure the below services are clicked.

I've configured the firewall to allow
SMTP
HTTP
HTTPS
FTP
REMOTE DESKTOP

each of the above services points to the Local COmputer Name (i've tried IP Address to and it reacts the same) and they are set to the correct ports and TCP.

After I apply the changes the server stops responding on all ports.

I've setup this in Windows XP SP 2 and it works fine.
Is there a difference?

Hi there,

I believe there is an issue where the Windows Firewall will not work on an adapter with more than one IP address configured. It's possible they fixed this in 2003 SP1, though I'm not sure.
