Thoughts on Virtual DNS Servers1/22/2007 9:04:18 PM

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on using something like Virtual Server to host the 4 External DNS Servers.

I was thinking I would use 2 servers each would hold 2 virtual images on server 1 the master resolver and advertiser dns servers. On server 2 the slave resolver and advertisers to make up the split-split dns scheme.

The 2 servers hosting the DNS servers can be part of the domain and be backed-up by something like Backup Exec.

I think this would make bringing the systems back to life in the event of hardware failure pretty quick I would think.

Even more so with Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 as it has better backup and restore features.

First, why 4?  Two are required.  Second, why a virtual server?  If you're going to have all your DNS on one box, add a second IP and set DNS to answer on both.  You already blew the reason for having two separate servers by putting them on one physical box, why complicate things?  Restoration of a dead server is easier without Virtual Servers.  The only advantage would be if you already had another running Virtual Server box you could install the DNS Viortual Server file onto, but if you have the second box you might as well configure two separate boxes to get the hardware redundancy anyway.

I was working off of the split-split dns configuration where you have 4 dns servers 1 for master/slave resolve/advertise instead of master(resolve/advertise) slave(resolve/advertise) 1 role per server instead of 2, from what I gathered on the internet this is the way to go security wise just expensive due to added hardware.

Thats why I was thinking host them virtually. only 2 images per server not all 4, the master images would be on one and the slaves on the other.

All images would be on there own dedicated NIC.

It adds extremely little security to a properly configured DNS, but if you're worried, use a public DNS server instead of your own.
