Shared SSL6/27/2004 3:29:58 PM

Hi

My ISP states the following

ASP.NET wont work when using shared SSL certificates.
This problem occurs because referencing your ASP.NET files through a different context changes the ASP.NET application used. For example, http://www.yourdomain.com/index.aspx is invoked by the ASP.NET application owned by your account. However, https://www.ispdomain.com/yourdomain/index.aspx is invoked by the ASP.NET application owned by the ispdomain.com domain.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way around this or if I am stuch with having to get my own SSL certificate to get SSL to work with .NET?

Thanks

Alan

You're not stuck with having to shell out cash for your own cert.

More than likey what they're doing is running the shared SSL site within its own application pool and at provisioning time don't create the customer's shared ssl virtual directory (maps back to the customer's root) as its own application, nested within the customer's application pool. To resolve this, they could create that vdir as its own application and assign it to the application pool your site lives within. They would also need to ensure your script mappings are set correctly on the virtual directory.

When they say it doesn't work, I would assume that means you will lose your session variables,i.e. if you have an ASP.NET shopping cart and redirect to the SSL site you would lose your session variables since you've switched application pools. To mitigate this, you could investigate keeping your session state in either SQL or query your ISP to see if they'll allow you to use the StateService. But, in general, what they're telling you is a false statement. ASP.NET can work within a shared SSL environment. There are webhosts out there that do provide shared SSL acocunts that are able to run ASP.NET pages.

I know this works,

I have an account with resellerchoice.com and have some ASP.NET pages running on a shared SSL.
