Newbie Question: Passing page variables to server control

I've just started using server side controls and am confused as to how to pass a variable argument to a control parameter.

I would hoping that the following would work:

<%
String sSomeText = "hello world";
%>

<MyLib:MyControl runat="server" Text="<%=sSomeText>" />

but the Text property passed to my control ends up being "<%=sSomeText>" rather than "hello world";

I can't find any help on this. Any ideas? I'm sure there's a simple answer.
