Need Advice,

Hi Everybody,

i am desining a document management system, where by i need to upload the documents

from the users and then when the user needs it i need to download or display it in the

browser.

i am using ASP.NET and MS SQL Server 2000 for this developement. this is a web based

application.

now, my question is which is the best method, either to store the douments in SQL Server or

to store as files in the web server. Can some one explain me the advantages and dis

advantages of both the methods and suggest me the best method.

Hi,

I run a knowledgebase for a large corporation. Currently, all of documents are stored as files on the web server. I have to tell you that this is honestly a good overall solution - the MS Index Server that comes free with pretty much every Microsoft Server OS does a pretty good job of indexing everything, and providing things you will need in your search engine, such as rakings, and sample portions of the page. As well, it recognizes most standard file types and indexes them. That is, you can store asp, html, doc, xls, ppt, pdf (etc) files on the server, and search for your keywords on ALL of them at once without any kind of special trickery. If this is the path you plan to take, then just do a search on Index Server and ASP, and you'll find lots of examples on the web of how to implement this.

The downside of the above approach is that Index Server can be a little funny sometimes. There is almost zero control over Index Server. You start the service, tell it what folders to monitor for new documents, and let it go. As you put new documents into the folders, it adds them to the catalogue. But if the catalogue gets corrupt, there isn't much you can do execpt for wipe it out and re-create it. You can't manage the catalogue. If there is a file type that isn't supported, it's tough to add it. Searching on custom metatags is a little cryptic. Moving files can sometimes whack the catalogue. Still, I'd reccomend this approach for 90% of the applications out there.

We just recently switched to a SQL Server 2000 back end. This is a great solution, but tougher to implement. You need to devise a system to deal with images in html pages, and things such as hyperlinks to other articles, and file attachments, etc. All of things require custom solutions. We are storing files and images in SQL as well - you'll need some heavy server hardware to do this if you plan to have a large number of files. And then there is the search issue - not that Index Server isn't providing a search capability, you'll need to devise your own. This isn't too hard for the html stored on the server, but to search files (doc, xls, etc) you'll either have to still store them as files and use Index Server, or store them in SQL and use the FreeText option to catalogue them.

hi all of you

i have read through the informations about the indexing service and the document management system. at present i am working on this only. right now i am having a problem. the problem is that i need to search the words in the files which are stored in the document management system. the files are stored in the webserver. i have tried it out with the example of indexing service (sourced from the internet).
now i want to know whether is there any possibility for me to check whether a particular word is available in acrobat reader. is there any plugins available

also kindly give me ur email id sathy so that i can mail to u personally also, i am working for a company in coimbatore and as a part of my study i am doing this project.
