Multiple Domains with WebHost4Life8/7/2006 3:51:15 PM

0

Hi

I am looking to switch to webhost4life and just wanted to check a few things with people already using them before talking the plunge.

I was looking to get the MS Windows hosting Advance Plan which provides ASP.NET 1.0/1.1/2.0 support.

Am I able to host multiple sites with the one account?  Also, what would be the best practice to acheive this?  With my 1&1 web space I have an aspx file that re-directs to different folders based on the domain requested.  Problem is I get the folder name tacked on to the end of the url so instead of getting 'www.mysite.com/default.aspx', I get 'www.mysite.com/mysite/default.aspx'

I then tried re-directing to the folders directly (via the control panel) but I ran into loads of issues where I had to have the bin folder in the root directory and then put all the DLLs from all my apps in there.  Suffice to say it didn't work.

So in summary, my questions are:

  1. Can I host multiple sites with 1 (Advance Plan) hosting package from webhost4life?
  2. What is the best practice for re-directing traffic/folder structure/file locations?
  3. Do they charge for releasing a domain should I decide to move my domains elsewhere?
  4. Can I host both ASP.NET 1.1 and 2.0 sites at the same time on the same account?

Kind regards, Carl Gilbert

I am a Webhost4life user (with approx. $9.95 per month plan) and I can answer some of your questions.

When you buy a hosting account with WebHost4life, you will specify one domain as your primary domain. You can host other domains as well but they all should point to the same folder which the primary domain points to. This means that you again have to do some redirection based on the requested domain name. The email accounts you get with it are limited to 20MB each and you need to pay for increasing the quota.

  1. Can I host multiple sites with 1 (Advance Plan) hosting package from webhost4life?
    1. You can host multiple sites in multiple folders
  2. What is the best practice for re-directing traffic/folder structure/file locations?
    1. I have no suggestions
  3. Do they charge for releasing a domain should I decide to move my domains elsewhere?
    1. I have my own domain names with godaddy which I am hosting with Webhost4life. If you already own the domain names, you can always go to your domain registrar and update your DNS records to point to WebHost4Life. In that case, Webhost4life does not own thos domains and hence there is no case of RELEASING. But if you are purchasing domains from WebHost4Life, you need to contact their customer case about this before you buy.
  4. Can I host both ASP.NET 1.1 and 2.0 sites at the same time on the same account?
    1. Yes. You can put multiple sites in multiple folders and then create a .NET application for each folder with its own ASP.NET version.

Hi Carl,
I'm into my 3rd year with them now.

You may try asking your questions directly to then via their 'Click here for Live help' link on their home page. You can also give their toll free number a try.

1. Can I host multiple sites with 1 (Advance Plan) hosting package from webhost4life?
I know you can host unlimited sub-domains. That's a good question though because I have an upcomming project for someone who wants to do the same thing. I was planning to make subdomains like http://<site1>.<mydomain>.com and so on. But I'd rather have one account and many domains. I'll check this out too.

They do have a bullet item in their hosting overview for 'Multiple Domains To Your Site" . Now what that means is a good question.

2 What is the best practice for re-directing traffic/folder structure/file locations?

That's a good question, I wonder if there's a way to interpret the incomming request and redirect? I havent tried that before. Hmmm? Something new to learn!

3. Do they charge for releasing a domain should I decide to move my domains elsewhere?
I wouldnt think so but run it by them. I know that if you cancel your hosting by mid-term, they'll refund your remaining balance.

4. Can I host both ASP.NET 1.1 and 2.0 sites at the same time on the same account?

Yes!

Good luck!

I host several websites on one account with WebHost4Life. Check my answers below.

1.Can I host multiple sites with 1 (Advance Plan) hosting package from webhost4life

Yes you can.

2. What is the best practice for re-directing traffic/folder structure/file locations

If you want the users to be able to access the websites without using a sub folder (http://www.site.com/default.aspx instead of http://www.site.com/site1/default.aspx) you can rewrite the url. This feature is build in ASP.NET 2.0. If you are using ASP.NET 1.x, you will find many free components available online to do this.

3. Do they charge for releasing a domain should I decide to move my domains elsewhere?

Not as far as I know

4. Can I host both ASP.NET 1.1 and 2.0 sites at the same time on the same account?

Yes you can. I am currently doing this.

What is the catch?  I have been with the same host for years now, so I haven't really researched the competition.

Unlimited domain names (that I pay for of course), unlimited subdomains, unlimited traffic, 1000 Mb (almost unlimited) disk space for $4.95?  There has to be something to look out for.  That seems too good to be true.

Hey, just one question, sorry to interrupt the thread Smile

Can I create virtual directories? I got many programs I would like to run from the same domain. So I want to do this:

alpascual.com/blog

alpascual.com/gallery

alpascual.com/junk

etc...

Is that possible?

Cheers

Al

Hi alockrem,

The $4.95 plan doesn't come with .NET 2.0 or .NET 1.1. You can't host multiple domains on this but can point multiple domains at the site - you can do that anywhere. It cost $9.95 a month to get .NET 2.0 but you still only get one domain.

Cheers,

Mark

Quit wasting your time and join www.ultimahosts.net

I researched all the companies, read ton of reviews, they are the best imo. I haven't

had them for a long time, but so far they are great. Mark is flexible and nice.

The most cheap place can sometimes get you cheap results. I'm not saying wh4l is bad at all.

Just talk to Mark and get a plan or trial account and you will stay with them.

Hi Mark,

I recently bought Windows 2003 Standard hosting account with winwebhosting.com. It is $9.71 pm. I found a lot of features with it. Do you have any competitive plans? If I am convinced, I can move to Ultima Hosts.

Hi Ravi,

I had a look at their plans and they are not too bad. Certainly some value there. Can you resell the domains? You probably only want to consider Ultima if you want code level support with front line developers. This is where we are so different to many other hosting companies. Feel free to use our Free Trial Week to check us out. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this.

Cheers,

Mark

Just one detail, ultimahosts does not include MS SQL in their $9 month plan like any of their competitors, I do believe if you want peoples business you should include that.

My 5 cents

 Hi albert,

Ultima Hosts do include unlimited MS SQL 2005 databases with every plan and we were the first host company in the world to offer this. You'll actually find that most other hosting companies have an extra charge for MS SQL. and only give you one database. Hope that clears things up as it is described on every plan on our website.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark

I was just looking at your Professional package.  It states 5 .NET domains.  What does this mean?  Can I register an many domains with this account as I like and then just forward them to one of my web applications?

I am with 1&1 at the moment so I can register variations of domain and forward them all to my main one.

Also, do you support .co.uk?

Also, also, what imformation can you give me about the trust level you operate at and what control I would have over ISS?

Hi Carl,

Five domains means you can have 5 top level domains created in the plan. So you can have www.mydomain1.com www.mydomain2.com and so on. With the forwarding I think you can do this at the register so you are free to forward on as many domains as you like in this regard. If you needed to set them up on the plan and have them redirect into different folders we would have to work something out in this regard.

We do support .co.uk and in fact have a London office. Our UK team would look after your needs during business hours and then Melbourne ( and soon Texas) would take care of your after hour needs.

We operate in a high trust level with asp.net and for control over IIS you can set various properites like custom error pages, front page extensions, mime types and windows security. Your best bet is to use one of our trial accounts to see what is available. We are also able to manually change your IIS settings on request for no cost.

Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Cheers,

Mark

Carl,

I use Ultima's reseller package with about 15 domains at the moment.  You're welcome to drop me a note at [email protected] if you have any more questions.  I like it quite a bit; they've done a nice job with it.

We are also doing branded reseller plans now where you get your own branded control panel login and branded nameservers. In face we will completely stay out of view (unless you need us)

DOes ultimahosts allow those 5 domains to point to thier own folder on the package? Other places call them domain points (Netsol calls them that)

I want 5 seperate website from that one package without having to use forwarding and masking nor do I want to deal with some cheesy redirect script like some have used. I want the site to look, from the user, as completely seperate sites. Do you support that at NO extra cost?

Hi Zenuke,

Yes those 5 websites can and will act comepletely independently from each other. The only way you can tell that they are linked is that they are all controlled from your one login to our control panel. Visitors to your site will not see anything like site1.domain.com, www.domain.com/site1, www.domain.com/site2 unless you choose.

Some companies limit you to a single website root per account so then you need to create folders for each website if you wish to run more than one. With UltimaHosts we give you complete control. Each domain you setup can also have it's own e-mail addresses for example, [email protected], [email protected].

In addition to all of this, if you later decide you need to setup a 6th website, an extra website can be purchased for around $30 per year and added to your existing plan allowing you to use your existing generous resources between even more websites.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.
