Hi i am planning to start a web site which will hopefully attract a lot of hits lets give a figure of 20,000 hits a day. What will my hosting and hardware requirements be, what should i start looking out and planning for?

You may want to look into using a hosting provider first as they provide the infrastructure so it will give you a chance to measure actual peak usage to determine the appropriate hardware.

20,000 hits a day is not really that much, you need to know more information like maximum concurrent users over what periods etc

Would be good to use the hosting provider first to get some trends.

Well, it depends on what kind of site you're hosting. 20,000 hits can be nothing, and everything depending on the type of site.

I agree that it's better to provide more information, will it host images, video etc? What type will be your database, if you have any?

Hi, the website is an ecommerce site, in which people can purchase products, it will have about 20 pages or more in total, every page will have an image relating to the product, and on each page there is a downloadable PDF, it is very likely that there will be about 20,000 or more concurrent users at any given time. There is also a forum and a blog which will be implemented into the system. The software used to create it is visual studio 2005 and the backend database is microsoft sql server 2005. Any other information please let me know, and thanks for the answers so far.

Is this a typo? 20k concurrent users would require a very large load balanced cluster of both IIS servers and SQL Servers.

Ok, then you're talking about a very expensive solution. Most likely thousands per month with all the licensing costs, high end servers with SCSI setup + load balancers. Try contacting RackSpace for a real quote, as they'll be able to set this up for you and manage it.

First of all there is BIG difference between hits and page views. 20,000 hits per day it is nothing. Hit is a single request from a Web browser for exactly one item from a Web server, so to  display a page that contains four graphics, five hits are required--one for the page itself and one for each of the four graphics. So my guess is that you think of page views not hits. for sites with 20,000 page views per day and more i use VPS (you will find good proces at fullcontrol.net) but i have sites that works on shared acc. without any problems (take a look at CrystalTech)

2nd- at he begining you said you expect 20k hits (or page views) and now it is 20,000 concurrent users at any given time !!! - please make up your mind....
I agree with MrRadic that you will pay a lot for solution that will work for 20,000 concurrent users at any given time AND still i don't think that is what you really need.
I belive you "mixed" names like saying hits when you think of page views
