I have been doing some research on hosting plans and these 3 looked pretty good.  Does anyone have any experience with them?  I hate basing my decision off of testimonials from the hosting providers site.

Actually, it seems as though that SQL Server 2005 is a $10 extra add-on for DiscountASP. Lots of other hosts include it in the price. I'm actually looking for a host for SQL05 and .net 2.0 myself. Discount was at the top of my list until I realized that SQL05 was an extra addon, especially with other hosts (I'm particularly looking at Ultima) that are beginning to win me over :) . By the way Mark, did Ultima just recently start having forums? It looks a little lonely!

Yes you are right and its not that obvious when you first sign up with DASP. Plus you only get a 100 MB DB that can't be split so each extra DB that is need is another $10 / month. Still out of the three I would prefer DASP.

Our forums are new and do suffer from a lack of traffic at the moment. We probably need to encourage current clients to use it as we haven't really promoted it yet. Feel free to join though.

It was great to come across this thread. I am looking for a new ASP.NET 2.0 hosting company to get AWAY from discountasp. My website was down for 12 hours with them last night. I had a DB userid issue that the onsite support answered (after a couple of hours) and said that it would be escalated to a DBA and answered soon. I found out later that there is no DBA onsite and they do not page or call one after hours for issue that cannot be resolved after hours. The issue will wait until the DBA comes in the next day.

This afternoon it was finally addressed. My website was down that entire time. I have been going back and forth with them on their forums and there are no changes intended so this support issue does not happen again. So now it is time to move on.

Imagine if your ecommerce site was down for 12 hours ?

Thats disappointing to hear. I have always held DASP in high esteem when it came to DB management (I used to host with them personally too). Another good reason to use a database mirror / failover scenario for mission critical sites and also have most / all of your staff actually trained to handle what was probably a simple task.

I signed up for WebHost4Life the other day and have just found out that they only allow 4 SQL databases, yet I have a chat log from their pre-sales staff (Gabriel) that says there is no limit to the number of SQL databases....only that the storage is limited to my total plan storage (3GB).  And their web site does not indicate any limit to the number of SQL DB's.  Quite disappointing that pre-sales mis-informed me.  The issue is being escalated to a manager, so hopefully the manager will give me more at no charge, otherwise I have to pay $15/yr per SQL DB or find another host.

Otherwise, I'm quite impressed with their services and the Control Panel.  You can create .Net apps in either 1.x or 2.0 all through the Control Panel.  Each SQL DB can be 2000 or 2005, your choice via the CP.

I'm looking at Ultima Hosts right now....it looks like they have what I want (.Net 1.x/2.0 and unlimited SQL DB), for about $80/yr less.  I'm going to chat with their pre-sales and hopefully they won't mis-inform me like WH4L did.

With your recent DB problem at the other host, did you find out if Ultima has 24x7 support for their DB?

No I have not asked. But I started looking and moving because of that and the response to it.. which was basically "We are sorry but we have no intention of changing anything so that does not happen again". I am sure Mark (Ultima) is watching this thread and knows my concerns.

One of the beauties of all of this... I have a customer service blog. So I have some new postings to make based on my experiences this week.

I posted a comment about this thread on Ultima's forum.  I would be interested in Ultima's response as I am building my eCommerce site right now and plan on launching it before the end of the year.

WebHost4Life got back with me this morning....they can only offer a 50% discount on purchasing more databases ($10/yr/db).  Unfortunately that's not good enough for me.  The Ultima Unlimited plan is looking pretty good right now.  It allows me to create my own hosting plans which would be good as I am a web developer and often refer my clients to the same hosting company that I use.  It would just be easier for me to create a hosting plan for them!  I need to find out more details though.

Primarily a developer.  For design I recommend my clients purchase a pre-made template and then I can customize from there.  I was looking into aspdotnetstorefront for my site as well, but it's a bit pricey for me right now.
