The above article by Scott illustartes how to create user controls and save them as a dll. This works great. But, there are some issues. First, the namespace defaults to ASP. Secondly, the tagname default to the file name with "_ascx" as a suffix.

I created a simple ascx file that has a drop down and some code-behind logic. I then pre-compile it into a dll. (Hopefully, the tool he mentions where you can name your own dll and have one for teh entire project will be released soon). In a separate web site project, I have an aspx page where I want to use the user control. I register it like so:

<%@ Register TagPrefix="Cam" Namespace="ASP" Assembly="App_Web_hyshd3rr" %>

<Cam:defaultcommunityselection_ascx ID="camCommunitySelection" runat="server" />


You can skip the register part if you register in the web.config file. You can see that the tagname leaves a lot to be desired. especially if this is going to be released to the public.

Is there a way to change the namespace for usercontrols and is there a way to change what the tagname will be when the project is compiled?

I did something similar that wasn't quite as messy with the directory setup and uses ILMerge to put together and rename the assembly being built: http://odetocode.com/Blogs/scott/archive/2005/10/06/2326.aspx. The namespace will still be ASP, and the control name will change if you are using a CodeFile instead of inline code.

Yes we are wqorking on the merge tool and it's affiliated Web Deployment Projects too and you'll be able to use this utility to manage the naming and content that drives the assembly created from the web application. That said, these do not change any default namespace used for the pages or user controls themselves.

You can simply use the following to create a namespace in your user controls

<%@ Control Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="UserAddress.ascx.cs" ClassName="SharedControls.UserAddressControl" Inherits="SharedControls.UserAddress" %>

namespace SharedControls {
  public partial class UserAddress : System.Web.UI.UserControl {
     ..
  }
}

Excellent. Will the name of the control in the assembly also be configurable? so that the page name and page extension is not the tagname used?

merge is a post compilation step. It only allows you to rename the output assembly.
