.... I am wondering if i can add one project that contains multiple class files defining different controls to my one large solution, or does each control need it's own project to compile into it's own unique .dll ? Thanks,

You can use one project for all controls, but then you also get one dll. Or you can use multiple solutions and get more dlls. Or you can compile controls using csc to produce as many dlls as you want and desire. Whatever suits you best.

So if i have a project called WebControls i can have all my webcontrols in there and just import them by assembly name to use each one? Thats really what i want is to consolidate all the controls into one project and import them easily and pick which ones to use in another solution.

yes - just create multiple classes and they'll all be individual controls - just managed via that one project and included in one .dll.

you do not need to create one control per one project if you don't want to but can have many controls per project.

Thanks i appreciate it, i am just now getting into creating server controls - starting to take a lot of individual functionality i have created in user controls or pages in various projets, and pull them out into their own re-usable, generic components that i can plug into other apps a lot quicker.

I spent a couple days reading tutorials and stuff and all i could find were various examples showing only one control per project file, so i was confused there. Also i gotta say there weren't very many good articles to be found on creating server controls. Some of them were down right wrong in some of the ways they were implementing the controls. or overriding existing controls like the datagrid and so forth- example code that code didnt even work.

Just a general comment....

tutorial = simple test case intended for learning the basic minimum. Much of what is learned in a tutorial [not just this one, or even just Microsofts....] is applicable to any real world solution.

Result: If you see something in a tuturial, you should automatically think that it is anoversimplification of what is really needed, and is almost definately NOT the way you want to do things....
