EditorZone in another windows11/22/2005 2:00:25 PM

Hi,

I really like the way http://my.msn.com use another modal windows to edit the webpart.

I know msn don't use .NET 2.0 native webparts, but is there a way to edit the webparts of a webpage with a EditorZone located on another page?

If yes do you have an exemple or any information?

I don't want to make this sound trivial but it probably wouldn't be as difficult as you might imagine.  While it's true that the my.msn.com page does indeed "pop" a dialog to allow property editing the page still requires a postback to set the web part properties.  And that means that it shouldn't be too difficult to make it work with the out-of-the-box behavior of the portal framework.

The mechanics would be something like:

  • Add a "special" edit link to each web part that calls a client-side script that pops a dialog for that part
  • The client-side script should pop the dialog and pass querystring args to identify the web part that called it
  • The user interface for the dialog could either be standard or customized on a "per control" basis (The Msn one seems pretty standard to me)
  • In its simplest form, closing the dialog would simply pass the updates back to the calling page
  • The calling page would force a submit to occur
  • Some implementation of  IPostBackDataHandler would take the updates and apply them to the control

As I wrote earlier, I don't mean to over-simplify or understate this problem but I think that if it is approached in a very logical manner then it might prove to be easier than you think!  Wink [;)]
