Configuring web-parts for a site from another site1/2/2007 3:01:17 PM

Hi

Is it possible to allow web-parts layout and properties etc to be configured on a website distinct from the one in which they are to be displayed. My client is using a system I developed which consists of 2 websites (1) a public facing shop and (2) an administration/telesales site. The admin site is used to administer the entire system (products, prices, booking maintenance etc). My client wants the front-page of the shop site to run from a mini Content Management System that will allow them alter the layout and content using the Admin site.

Web-parts seems like the ideal technology for this as they'll want to change the layout of the various regions and use differing types of content (ie HTML text, scolling text, list of most popular products etc) as they see wish.

I'm not interested in personalization from a users persepctive just yet, but would it be possible to allow my client to arrange and configure the various web-parts for the shop front-page from within the admin application

This system was originally developed using ASP.NET 1.0 so I have my own membership scheme independant of the new stuff ASP.NET 2.0 provides. Is that going ot further complicate matters.

Thanks

Ben

Hello,

It is possible to accomplish this if both websites use the same Membership database. There are two ways of accomplishing this.

1.) Create a page that is named the same on both the public facing site and the admin site (for example webparts.aspx). The membership database uses the page name to pull the web part personalization data. In the code behind for the admin site, you can set the web part manager to always be in edit mode. In the code behind for the public facing site, you can set the web part manager to always be in browse mode to prevent users from being able to edit the page. Whenever you modify the page from the admin site, you can go to the same page on the public facing site and see the changes appear. Note that the same web parts will need to be available on both pages.

2.) If you want to use different page names unlike the first example, you can create your own SqlPersonalizationProvider class that takes in a querystring value to identify what personalization data to pull. You can use the same querystring value on the admin site to edit the web parts and on the public facing site to display the web parts.

Thanks,

Andrew
