How do you deploy a Project (WebSite)

Hello everyone.

I'm new to VS 2005 . A whiz a Classic Asp and trying to get comfortable with ASP.NET.

I can easly create a new project (Website) on my VS 2005 and click on the run button and run the website but how to make the websites you build locally work on a remote server?

I did a test with VS2005 and created a new project told its location to be on \\remoteserver\c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\ProductionWebsite\Teams\SVCReport

It created the project and related files in that location but when I tried to run it just to see the default.aspx with the simple "Hello World" text I get errors on both the production server and by clicking the play button on my VS 2005 Envoriment.

Can someone please advise me on the correct way to deploy project.

Can I not use a remote server to build my projects using pipes \\ and directly edit the project since it is in my LAN ?

Or do I have to create the projects on my workstation then move them to the desired location on the remote server?

If there are tutorials reguarding this information .Please let me know about them

The best way I have found is to build localy and deploy using the publish function.

Items to note:

publish does a complete delete and rebuild.

This is desireable but if you are mixing apps in the same folder you can wipe out other apps inadvertantly.
I have a local folder that I publish to and the copy/ftp the files to the web server.

Locally you do NOT need to set up any form of IIS using VS2005 just build and debug from the IDE
Remotely you do need to have IIS set up with 2.0 and have your folder set up as an application (in IIS)

This may be the solution to just build the website and publish it to some folder at local computer....But how to use the website after that without starting vs 2005.... Sorry for being a new programmer...

Yes.. It would be nice to have a little more detail on the specifics of moving a project to a production server.

Can anyone direct me to a good tutorial regarding the publishing of a website designed in VS2005.

Thanks to anyone who can spare me a bone for this info. :-)

Have you looked into Visual Studio 2005 Web Deployment Project at all? MSbuild is a poweful tool and in my case I extended my deployment project to deploy to my staging server, zip content, and generate emails. Here are a couple blog entries on the subject:
