I installed the Visual Web developer 2008 but when I go into the File > New Website, there is no option to build an AJAX enabled web site. Although a few tutorial I have found state that it should be there.

The only options available to me are:

• ASP.NET Web Site
• ASP.NET Web Service
• Empty Web Site, and
• WCF Service

There is also an option to Search online templates.

I did find a post on converting a website from the ASP.NET to ASP.NET AJAX Enabled, but would like the feature as described in various books and web sites.

 What have I done wrong with my install? I used the Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition and installed all packages to the PC

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks


 

There used to be this separate option in VWD 2005 if you installed Ajax (which was not part of the .NET 2.0 framework).  However, Ajax is available to all web sites/projects in VWD 2008 because it is now part of the .Net 3.5 framework and doesn't need to be installed separately.  Just choose ASP.NET Web Site.

I don't appear to have that option, to create an AJAX website.

I can only start a new ASP.NET WEB SITE and then add AJAX Web Form to it.

Is that the same? and do I just remove the existing default.aspx first?

All you need to do is create a web form as usual, and add a scriptmanager to it, plus whatever else you want to use from Ajax - UpdatePanel, Extender etc.

I'm also missing any 3.5 Extensions template and I'm confused about some terminology being used here. Does the term ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions apply to AJAX functionality built into the .NET 3.5 version? In which case there wouldn't be a separate template as there was in Visual Studio 2005?

If this is the case why does Scott Gu's blog on the new Dynamic Data Support show an ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions in the Visual Studio installed templates section (second screenshot)?
