Hello,

I have Visual Studio 2003, SQL 2000, Net Framework 1.1 and Windows XP Pro SP2 installed in my computer.

Can I install Visual Web Developer 2005 Express?

I know i need Net Framework 2.0 Beta and SQL 2005 Beta.

How safe it should be?

I am just starting to use Visual Studio and i think maybe starting with the 2005 Beta Version will be a good way and easier way to learn instead of using VS 2003.

Can you give me your advice?

And can I use Visual Web Developer 2005 Express and Framework 1.1?
The server where i host my web sites has Framework 1.1.

Miguel,

First off, you can install Visual Web Developer 2005. If you install SQL Express 2005, it will replace some of the common SQL 2000 files. So be careful! As for using VWD with 1.1, that is possible. However, you won't be able to use and deploy applications using the new features in 2005 on a server running 1.1 only. Currently, your hosting provider can not run the 2.0 framework. After the Beta 2 release, a GoLive license will be issued.

Jason,

So if i remove SQL 2000 and Visual Studio from my computer and i install Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Beta and SQL Express 2005 Beta i will be able to create web sites which run in 1.1 unless i use the news 2.0 features.

I am afraid that somethings which work in 1.1 like a datagrid are different in 2.0 and then i will have problems in using it.

My other fear is if i create an SQL database with SQL Express 2005 Beta that i will not be able to place it in my hosting company server.

What do you think?

I would like to use Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Beta right now even for 1.1 web sites because i will spend time learning something which is the future.

Is there somekind of warning when i start using any of the 2.0 features?

I've always used the Visual Studio products, but I elected to work with the beta 1 version of Visual Web Developer 2005 instead. It's a good product, but clearly in an early beta version.

Many people reported that the VWD beta 1 expired on 1 March, but my copy is still working fine (don't set your clock to the future...it apparently breaks VWD beta 1).

There are going to be many changes from VWD beta 1 to beta 2. You certainly can load up the beta 1, but understand in advance that many features will change when the beta 2 comes out (they're saying late Q1, but my guess would be April-May).

You might want to consider EXPLORING the beta 1 version, but don't get too into any details around the datasource concepts, as many of the names and implementation details will be changing.

I've had no problems running VS2003/.NET 1.1 and VWD2005 beta1 side by side (I've not been actively using SQL Server 2005 yet, only the SQL 2K desktop).

Just my two cents...enjoy! There are many wonderful new features in ASP.NET 2.0!
