Missing properites - why on earth?

Hi,

I'm kind of puzzled when it comes to the mysteriously missing properties of several controls. For instance, I've been looking a couple of hours trying to figure out how to set a selectedvalue property of a dropdownlist, when that value should come from my database. To my astonishment, . I found someone using

ValueField="landID" SelectedValue='<%# Bind("landID") %>'

but it doesn't show up in the properties pane or in the autocomplete menu.

How come?

Otherwise, I'm mostly very pleased with VWD Express and threw out DreamWeaver.

This is just one of the ways you can databind controls to a database. There are other ways as well so it is difficult to suggest just one way here.

Thanks for replying but I'm not sure I got through to you alright. :-)

What I meant was that ALL properties of a control such as a label or gridview should show up in the properties pane and also, or ESPECIALLY, when using the autocomplete function when writing in sourceview.

Why isn't this the case? Would it be hard to fix (I imagine: no)? Can't the developer team do this for the next minor upgrade of VWD?

BTW - to anyone who knows: I'd like to be part of a VWD Express beta or user group. I do have a background in software development, web usability, and beta groups. How can I apply for that?

SelectedValue is not technically settable in markup. It is exposed in the framework, but it is not marked by ASP.NET in System.Web assembly as a property that should be used in markup. Therefore VWD does not show it in property grid or intellisense. SelectedValue is supposed to be used in code. Although assigning the property may work at runtime, it is done mostly for compatibility with classic ASP.

In fact, when I switch to design view, I get "Error creating control, SelectedValue property cannot be set declaratively".
