I received the "Unable to save converted project file" trying to convert a solution of several projects

I realised that the projects were under source control, so I just removed the "readonly" attribute for all files under the root and the solution converted

There is probably a more elegant solution, but this worked - the projects all converted OK

 

If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

Yes. VS will prompt to check out anything it needs to modify. Which will help when it comes to checking in the upgrade.

This didn't happen - I just got the conversion wizard.

 However, Due to upgrades between VS2005-VS2008 and other issues, the most recent solution was somewhere other than where I was opening it.

I found all SLN files and opened the last one I used.  There were still issues, so I went to VSS anc checked in every project on teh PC

After a bit more fiddling, I managed to convert most of teh project, but 2 sub projects requried manual intervention

If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.
