Hey all,

 I just got my free copy of Visual Studio Pro 2008 for attending the Visual Studio 2008 Install Fest. When attempting to install this from the DVD media, I continually get an error when 'copying required resources to your temp directory'.

 Setup has encountered a problem while trying to copy:
E:\setup\VSSetupWatson\1033
Press Retry to attempt the copy again. Press Cancel to cancel setup.

 I have tried several times. rebooted several times. disabled auto-updates, etc. Still the same issues.

I have 73 gigs available on my HD. No copy of the beta on my machine.

Anyone else having this issue?

Could it be faulty media?

Have you tried copying the content of the DVD to the local HDD and then installing from the copy? 

Yes I have. It gets me past the previous issue, but then I get an issue where the installer requests dexplorer.exe and asks me to identify the folder where it is contained. I have't found this file in my local copy, but found it on the DVD. Apparently its "read only" and I am unable to copy it to my local.

 I am currently attempting to download the beta and install that first since this appears to be an issue during the 3.5 framework installation process. Perhaps these files will be handled for me by the beta installer.

I'm getting exactly the same error.  I just uninstalled VS2005 and started to load my "free" copy.  I'm on Vista and just have the .NET 2.0 framework.  I ran Setup.exe as administrator, so that's probably why I didn't get the temp dir error.  Also, I had no beta copy.  I put free in quotes because it's already costing me!

update:

I just put the full version dvd into my laptop which has the beta on it, and it allowed me to simply place my cd key in to "upgrade" the beta. So the answer may be to download the beta (or order the beta dvd) and install that, then upgrade.

Silly.... I know.

For what's it's worth, I tried just downloading/installing the .NET 3.5 framework first.  Then tried the production copy install and it worked.  Almost.  "Setup Failed - The following component failed to install: Windows Mobile 5.0 SDK R2 for Pocket PC".  I guess I'll have to remove that old Windows Mobile SDK I installed last year. (Sigh)
