Working in Teams1/29/2008 10:08:31 AM

Our web team is migrating from MM Dreamweaver to Visual Studio.  With Dreamweaver has a simple "check in" "check out" system which served us well and protectced the files for all our developers.  Since using VS 2005 Pro i have not seen a similar feature.

Can anyone suggest a 3rd party tool ( i assume there is nothing built it?!) preferably free or open source which will allow us to this?

TIA

There's alway VSS of course if your team is small and the code base is not large. Otherwise .NET developers seem to be moving in two directions: TFS and open source. TFS is an enterprise solution for managing the entire software lifecycle from conception and design through implementation and deployment. It's big, comprehensive, and not cheap. The  most popular open source alternative is Subversion. Specifically with Visual Studio 2005 there is no integration. However, I've found TortoiseSVN to be a very easy to use Windows IDE shell extension (wrapper) around Subversion. You could outsource your code repository to a place like wush.net and use TortoiseSVN to commit/update through right-click context menus in Windows. An alternative to TortoiseSVN that has true integration with VS IDE would be a commercial app called VisualSVN but I haven't used it so I can't say much about it. Hope this helps and good luck!

Hi James,

Thanks for your replay very informative. My team is very small, 3/4 at most. I had looked at Subversion but got a little scared off by the fact that there was no integration with VS and it runs on Apache and looked like it required a lot to work to get it going.

VSS was something I had used before (over 5 years ago) but I believe it requires SQL 2005 minimum, our development server runs 2000; incidentally can you install SQL 2005 express on a machine that already has SQL 2000 and still use them both?  Is there a trial available of VSS?

The team system looks good but way too much money and it requires Server 2003 and the latest SQL.  I will investigate your other suggestions, many thanks for that.

I don't blame you for wanting to move away from VSS -- I have to run analyze-fix scripts twice a week on one large VSS database I maintain in order to keep it healthy. The integration is nice but it's slow. Do a google on "subversion hosting" and you'll find some affordable options. I use wush.net at USD $20 a quarter. More importantly than the price is the disaster recovery: your code is offsite and backed up all at once. I'm reasonably sure that you cannot have two versions of SQL Server running on the same machine. Does your dev server have 2+ GB of RAM? If so, consider setting up virtual environments and running SQL 2000 on one and SQL Express on the other. You can join each of them to the domain and it works great.
