Questions about .pdb9/6/2007 1:59:11 AM

0/0

Hi,

Assume I build a solution to generate a .dll and its .pdb.

And if I do not deploy the .pdb along with .dll,

Dose the .dll work well as well?

What is the functionality of .pdb?

Regards,

Ricky.

Hi,

Dll is working fine without .pdb. Visual Sudio generate pdb, so you can add controls from dll to your toolbox.

Not quite. PDB = Program Database. PDB files contain debugging information, they have nothing to do with the toolbox Smile No, you don't have to deploy PDBs.

Thanks

But you you should know that if you're generating a pdb, it means you're compiling without optimizations and with debug info, which is to say that it will run slower.  You should switch modes so the pdb is not generated and you'll get tighter dlls

Not necessarily. Compiler can generate pdb for fully optimized release code. PDB generation does not mean the build is a debug build. This is exactly how crash dump analysis works when you submit it to Microsoft: we have pdb for the binaries released (fully optimized) so we can see where the crash happened.

Bottom line: pdb generation has no effect on size or speed of assemblies.

Thanks
