Publishing a project1/7/2007 7:30:46 AM

Hi all,

I have created a project using VS2003 and converted it to VS2005 and is working OK on my machine.  I have put the 2005 version on a sever that support VS2005, but it's not working.  It gives an error.  The error is about not finding the Menu control that I created with VS2005!! After diging for what causing the problem, I found out that VS2005 does not create a DLL file when compiling the project.  I downloaded SP1 and installed it.  I compiled the project but I don't see any DLL file created for the project!!!  I have read that even if I have not installed SP1 and put all the project's files on the sever, it should work (DLL will be created automatically).

The way I published the project's files into the sever is simple copy and paste all files, is this the correct process to publish a project?

How I can force VS2005 to create the DLL file and be put in the BIN folder as it was in VS2003? What I am missing?

Thanks

Sounds like you are using a Web Site project. Use the Web Application Project instead to get a compiled dll that you can deploy like you did in VS 2003.

Do a search for Web Application Project and you'll find the diff between 'Web Site Project' and 'Web Application Project'

Hello Mike,

Oh .. I see.  Now I understand why there is no DLL in the Bin folder.  So,  how would I be be able to convert Web Site project to Web App project? Is there anything I should take care of while converting?

I will search the net for an answer on how to convert to Web App.  but I would appreciate it if I could see your reply.

Thanks

You don't need to convert Web site to a Web App unless you really need to compile site into a dll. Web App won't automatically solve anything. You need to copy all source files in the Web site to the server. If you created a custom control, you should already have its dll in the bin folder on your local machine. Make sure it appears in the bin folder on the destination server. If your control is in App_Code, make sure you copied all files in the App_Code to the server.

Thanks

Hi again,

Thanks for your support.  It works now Yes!! I have not converted the project.  I have selected  Use fixed naming and single page assemblies  when I published the project.  The question is, do I have to re-publish the project everytime I do some changes or just copy & paste the modified ones?

Thanks
