Versions 

.NET 2.0 and ASP.NET 2.0 

Settings:

I have a solution which contains many websites and a few class libraries.

Problem:

One of the website is not compiling any more. It has project references and these are no longer recognised.

 
Error Message: 

The type or namespace name 'XYZ' does not exist in the namespace 'ABC.PQR' (are you missing an assembly reference?) 

 

How do I go about solving this problem?

1. Try the 'using namespace' statement explicitly.

2. Copy the library (.dll) into the website's Bin directory, if you dont have one, create the Bin directory and copy to it.

3. You can install the library to the GAC, using the GACutility, if the library could be used by multiple applications.

What is also quite possible is that you may have an exception that prevents one of your libraries from compiling and you are just focusted on the errors that are consequences of that exception. So check other exceptions.

After cleaning my local copy and checking out again, I could run my project. I have not figured out the exact error but my project compiles now.

A colleague guessed that possibly I had renamed a file and left it in the project causing issues.

Depended on the source control you use, you can go back in last check in and retreive the file and do a compare with windiff to figure exactly what caused the issue.
