Project Item Template issue

I've come to the realization that $projectname$ and $safeprojectname$ are not available when adding a new item to an existing project. Is there a way to get that information otherwise?

Can I type the automationObject in RunStarted or use projectItem in ProjectItemFinishedGenerating to get me the project name?

NOTE: This works in non-web items. I have yet to test, but highly doubt, that it will work in web items.
