I have a website and if I want to precompile it, I choose Build->Publish Website. This creates DLLs and folders in My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Projects\mySite\PrecompiledWeb\mySite. I can then FTP this folder structure to my web host.

Now say I make some changes to my code, add a few pages, etc. I then precompile again. I am ready to FTP again. But I don't want to FTP the entire site, just the new objects. How can I find out what to FTP?

Thanks

Hi,

so you have done precompiling with "Use fixed naming and single page assemblies" selection checked (in Publish Website tool)? With that you are able to get them page by page (you might also want the site to be updatable), though VS does precompile in all or nothing fashion.

Web Deployment Project is also capable to add value to this since with it you can control more precise how assemblies etc are created (single assembly, one assembly per content folder, one assembly for UI elements, an assembly for each compiled file)

Thanks,

I am using third-party controls that I know that I don't have to FTP. FTPing these is very time-consuming (especially if you are using a hosting service). How can I identify the ones that I need to move?

Thanks

Hi Yaip,

If you know the names of your third-party controls, then you can just avoid copying them everytime.

If you use the Web Deployment Project that is mentioned above, then you can also just copy the code-behind assembly that is generated -- along with any .aspx page you modified.

Hope this helps,

Scott
