Order of document tabs in VS 200511/8/2005 9:47:11 AM

0

Hello,

new Visual Studio 2005 came with inverted order the document tabs open in. I mean, when you click on a file in the Solution Explorer, it opens up as a new tab. These tabs are now placed right-to-left opposed to what it used to be - left-to-right.
This really annoys me a lot because it makes the work with VS pretty confusing.

I was searching the options but couldn't have found if there was a way to set it up the way it worked in VS 2003.

Does anyone have an idea?

Newly opened documents should appear left to right - this wasn't changed in VS 2005. What was changed was the addition of a dropdown at the far right of document tab area to allow you to quickly select an open document.

It seems it was, because they open like that for me and my colleagues. Yes, the drop-down is there, but it does not help the order.

Do you say that for you they open left-to-right? If so there is a hope this can be set up somewhere :-)

I looked at VS2003 and newly opened documents  appear to the right of existing documents. In VS2005 a newly opened documument always appears as the left most document. I believe this change was made to ensure the document you just opened appears in a consistent location. I don't believe there is any way to get the VS 2003 behavior but I will check with the developers who worked on that feature.

You might have had a good intention, however VS2003 way is the way used in dozens of other editors. It's a standard we are used to and changing it without giving the ability to set it back just causes confusion. I really like VS otherwise, but this little thing drives me crazy...

I confirmed with the devolper that there is no way to get back to the VS2003 behavior.

Everyone who prefers the old behavior should tell microsoft through the product feedback center. This has already been suggested, but it would help to add your vote and comments to the existing suggestions.

In VS 2005, go to community >> send feedback and click the make a suggestion link. Search for "2005 tabs left right" and you'll find it...

I finally go around to upgrading this weekend, and this is the only thing I really really really hate...

This has really been one of those little features that have bugged me. I hate having to search around for something I expect.

I agree. It is truly annoying!

I usually defend MS but their reasoning overlooked the most common way I open lots of files; from the Find window. If I'm searching for some code I've used elsewhere, I may cycle through half a dozen files or more. Now the file I was working with has gone and I have to remember to look elsewhere.

When I want to close the searched files I just opened, I have to click on the far right side (where the document close icon [X] is, but I have to keep looking at the far right where the document gets closed to make sure I don't accidentally close too many. At least before, closing the last opened document didn't move all the other document tabs over by one.

I also don't like the new find window because I can no longer see all my choices and options - I now have to activate the dropdown to determine what files I'm searching. In the past, I just had to tab through and then press enter, very easy to do with just a laptop keyboard. Now when I tab to the Look in dropdown, I have to move my hand to use the arrow keys to cycle those choices.

If anyone finds out MS fixes or modifies these features, please post a response here.

Thanks.

I think it is only annoying the first few days, then you realize, its conveineant,... you get the drop down list with a full list of pages at the right near the solution explorer, which makes it easy....

your last opened, or last active doc tends to appear in the far left, so that it is near the tool box, save options and things like that... and you are less likely to accidently close a window you are working on.

if you want to complain about vs 2005... i would ask why does it freeze and think so much about things like opening a file sometimes :-)
