I use vs 2005 profession edition.
When I click on Open Web Site menu items it takes 25-30 seconds to open file dialog.
My PC pentium 4 with 1G ram.

P.S. Yes, I have network folders.

If the default tab in the Open Web Site dialog is IIS and you have many virtual directories then the dialog will be slow opening. In my testing it seems that over 25 virtual web roots slowed things down noticeably. It's slow because we enumerate all directories on the server before we can display them in the treeview. This bug in VS 2005 was postponed to the next release of Visual Studio. Are you opening webs from the IIS tab? How many vroots do you have?

The tab opened is "File System"

I have 7 network folders.

I can search our database on that to see if it is a known issue, and see if I can reproduce here. How exactly did you create the Network folders?

What do you mean?

It's simply mapped drivers:

H: pointed to \\[server name]\Path...
Y: pointed to \\..\\ and so on.

The term "web folders" can mean many things, so I wanted to be clear if you were using mapped drives, SharePoint folders, or FrontPage web folders. I'll try to repro here.

A couple of questions about the repro steps. Does it ALWAYS take 25-30 seconds, or if you repeatedly launch and then cancel the Open Web Site dialog does the time to launch it get faster? Approximately how many folders are on the mapped drives? It's possible VWD tries to read the directory structure like we do for IIS. I will double-check with our developer to see what the possibilities are.

2) Amazingly it's takes every odd time 20-25 sec. every even time 1-2 sec.

I have not been able to this behavior. I mapped 7 network drives to my machine, and Open Web Site launches in 1-2 seconds every time with the "File System" tab as the default. I mapped a mix of drives, two in my office, some in my builing, and a few that are miles away. I'll send a link to this thread to the developer who owns the Open Web Site code to determine what might be causing the slowness for you.

I'm sorry. Nothing happens on PC while I open "Web Site".
CPU is 3% RAM is free.
I can see little bit of explorer.exe takes CPU time but nothing serious.
I have an XP with sp2 and firewall is off.

I asked the developer about this and he said there could be a elay if the mapped drive needs to timeout, but he wasn't sure why it would alternate long-short-long-short, etc.

In my testing I did not notice the Open Web Site dialog taking a long time to launch, but I did notice opening a mapped drive took a long time to complete in one case:
1) Open Web Site and choose location X: which is mapped to a server with one small folder. (opens fast)
2) Open Web Site and choose location Y: which is mapped to a server with dozens of folders and nested folders (opens fast)
3) Open Web Site and choose location X: again, and here, it seems VERY slow, as if it's taking a long time to close the large Y: connection. Maybe I'll install netmon to sniff network packets and see if there is extra network traffic.

Are you opening the mapped drives as web site locations?
Is it the opening of the web site that is taking a long time as in my case, or is it just the dialog launching?
If you repeatedly do Open Web Site then Cancel, does the dialog still launch slowly, or is it only slow between opening a web site?

It's strange because I can't recreate behaivior which takes place in first time lonh-short-long etc..

Any way, when I click on "OpenWeb Site" menu after the dialog opened the focus is on last opened web project which is in

c:/doc and settings/[user]/my documents/visual studio 2005/projects.

May be the fact that I have 272 folders in my documents directory somehow connected to slowlyness of dialog?

I dont know.

I added this information to an active bug we are tracking on this issue. Unfortunately I don't have a work-around right now. My developer says it's the same issue as other web types, where we block UI in the dialog. I'm not sure when it will be fixed, but it's an active issue on our list right now.
