Network Project with visual studio 200512/1/2005 12:29:00 PM

Hi there,

I've got a little problem with VS 2005, in our (small) office we have migrated some of our project to 2.0. Our project are stored on a main server (the server is dedicated to development), and nothing is stored on our local drives. This is of course for backup purpose, and we also have sometime several people working on the same project.

Since we have migrated some of our project can't be build anymore, we get the following error

An error occurred loading a configuration file: Failed to start monitoring changes to '<directory of the project here>' because the network BIOS command limit has been reached. For more information on this error, please refer to Microsoft knowledge base article 810886. Hosting on a UNC share is not supported for the Windows XP Platform.

note that this error seems to happend only on the biggest project.

So i searched on the Net, first i referred fo the Microsoft knowledge base article 810886, but editing the registry on both the client and the server didn't solve anything.
Then, i searched if someone got a way around and i finally saw this:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/support/knownIssues/default.aspx

1.9   Profiling and running instrumented modules from network shares is not supported

Under default Visual Studio settings, running an instrumented binary from a network share results in an unhandled exception.

To resolve this issue

Copy or move the project or binary you wish to profile to your local hard drive.

Wich means i believe (English is not my native language, even if you had probably already figured that out Embarrassed [:$]), that visual studio does no longuer support the development of application from a network drive.

So, i don't think we were the only one working this way(i already saw this issue several time on the net), but i don't think either that microsoft sacrificed the ability to program .net project on a network in order to improve security. So my question is, how are we supposed to organise collaborative work with visual studio 2005.

Any help, clue, links would be greatly appreciated.

I am just getting started with the 2005 .NET 2.0 material, so I am certianly not an authority on the matter, but I thought I'd offer up what I could think of to see if that might be of help to you.

While thus far all of my work has been on local type drives so I've never done a mapped network drive setup like you have.  The thing that makes me wonder about your problem is which version of VS.NET 2005 are you using?

I ask that because starting with the VS.NET 2005 editions, Microsoft has come out with Team editions of the product that are supposed to be targeted for networked/decentralized/multi-developer type environments.  You may want to have a look at those editions and their specifications and determine if your edition is of the Team suite or if it is one of the other suites of the product.

Hope that helps give you a starting point to look for your problem.

Thanks for answering,

yeah i found out about the whole team foundation thing, like i said we are a really small office, so it seems a bit exaggerated to use such a powerfull tool.

Still, it cannot hurt to give it a try.

Are you running Windows XP on the server machine, or Windows 2003 Server?

What you may be seeing is a limitiation on Windows XP that doesn't allow hosting UNC shares, in which case using Windows 2003 on the server would fix the problem.

Hey, I would really reccomend using SourceSafe (http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/previous/ssafe/)
it allows you to check in your code. see what all has been changed since the last build. ect. its really nice and you can set it up to use over lan also. works and is integreted into visual studio flawlessly.

Well, like I said I was just taking a best guess-estimate of what the issue might be keeping in mind I have never had to do a distributed type environment like you have.

I see someone has posted a note about the operating system of the server containing the shared drive and that could be at the heart of the matter as well, certainly worth looking at to see.

Hope you are able to find the answer and get rolling pretty soon.

Ira

Our server machine is running under windows 2003 server, so this limitation seems to apply even if the client machines are the only one concerned.

>> Blake05

Thanks for the link, i will look that carefully, it looks promising.

>> irasmith

Well, i have watch a few online demos, and from what i have seen, with team foundation you can build locally, and VS 2005 will be able to publish the impacted file on the server, surely it is related to the sourcesafe Blake05 has mentioned.

As soon as i got the time, i will try this out.

Thanks for the help.
