Hi All,

I am trying to learn ASP.net with VS 2K5 (C#)

I have a full legal copy of VS2k5 to which I spent a years worth of savings on...

I have George Shepards book  ASP.Net.  2.0

on one of the sections of the book we are putting in a validation expression

What the problem is, (after some searching on yahoo) is that that regular expression doesn't work in VS2K5.

I am having some problems with VS 2K5, when I click on a control in VS it takes a long time for the properties of that control to turn up about 10 - 12 seconds after i clicked on the control the properties would finally show up..

you will notice in that screen shot that there is no "..." in the properties to bring up the regular expression box...the same was for the "controltovalidate"

Does anyone have any idea about this?

Ah, that explains alot...yes that did work...thank you for that, I appreciate it.

although it solves half the problem I am still trying to figure out while it takes a long time when in source mode to bring up the properties

admittedly its has improved this morning after a reboot..but it still takes about 1-2 seconds instead of 10

also i dont hate george or especially vs2k5..its a beautiful piece of software ...

wish i knew how to use it too its full potential :) that is why i am learning it :)

Since you paid for it, you obviously have the Standard Version or the Professional Version. Maybe even a Team Edition. In the box there is a book. For the standard edition it is Green, for the Professional Edition it is Red. Read it. It is immensly helpful.

One of the reasons there may be some lag in the source view is even though it doesn't create an instance of a control, it still needs to pull some information from other files. for instance, if you are using Themes and you edit the Theme or StylesheetTheme attribute on the @Page Directive, IntelliSense will automatically show a list of all the themes. When the source view loads, it pulls that information from the App_Themes folder, which might put some lag on it.

Yes I have the orange copy..it came with some nice posters..would rather $20 off the price and not got the posters...perhapes ever $50 if i just got a shrink wrapped set of disks and saved on the packaging :)

Why is it immensly helpful? it only looks like a "where everything is" basic thing and does not look important.....

I am glad you posted that because if you...who appears to have a reasonably good experience with it can find some neat tricks with it..then im bound to find it full like aladdins cave :)

It just aggrevates me when you buy a book and it has such a small yet such a vital step missing.

in fact i had to go back and adjust what work had been done because the book told me to put in a "RequiredFieldValidator" instead of a "RegularExpressionValidator"  and then asks you later to put a regular expression into a required field validator.....

I faxed and emailed  Microsoft Press about this but they have not bothered to even acknowledge me.....(Should I be suprised?)
