how to reset the initial "type of developer" settings in the IDE1/17/2007 1:47:42 PM

All --

Please help.

I need to know how to reset the initial "type of developer" settings in the IDE, for VS.NET 2005 Professional Edition with SP1.

Here are the details.

When VS.NET 2005 is installed and then started for the 1st time ever, it displays a dialog that allows the enduser to set the "type of developer". It has options for the various type of development, such as "C#", "VB", "Web Developer", etc.

How can one get back to that dialog in order to change the settings?

Please advise.

Thank you.

A reset of environment settings can be performed by clicking Tools > Import and Export Settings... and choosing "Reset all settings"

I appreciate the attempt.

However, In VS.NET 2005 SP1 the option to change the "type of developer" is not in >Tools, >Options, >Environment, >Startup.

All that I can change there is...

(1) At startup, (dropdownlist), options =  Open home page OR Load last loaded solution OR Show open project dialog box OR ... etc...

(2) Start page news channel, (textbox)

(3) Download content every (checkbox) if checked then NN minutes (2 digit selector) is available

That's not what I am looking to find.

Rather, I want to reset the choice of "Visual Basic Developer" OR "Web Developer" OR ... etc... that appears when VS.NET 2005 is run for the 1st time.

If you have any other hints, please send them along.

Thank you.

That might work.

I did not try it; but, it did send me in the right direction.

To do what I want, one can do the following...

  1. Close all instances of VS.NET 2005 SP1.
  2. One one instance of VS.NET.
  3. Choose >Tools, >Import and Export Settings, >Import selected environment settings.
  4. Click "Next".
  5. Select "Yes, save my current settings", and then click "Next".
  6. In the next dialog, there is a question "Which collection of settings do you want to import?". There is a list of the "Default" settings, such as-- "General Development Settings", "Visual Basic Development Setting", and so on.
  7. That is exactly what I was trying to find.
  8. Select the desired option (or Browse to a custom option).
  9. Choose "Next".
  10. Select the options to be imported in the selection tree.
  11. Continue.
  12. Done.

I really appreciate your suggestions.

(I think that I might mark your post as the answer because it was the closest.)

Thank you.

From the command line where VS2005 is installed, try "devenv /resetsettings". I believe you will then see the prompt to select the "type of developer" when VS runs.

Hope that helps,
