Go To Definition... I Don't Want The Metadata!12/8/2005 6:28:00 PM

0/0

I noticed when I have multiple projects in a solution and click "Go to Definition" on a reference to an object contained in a different project, it doesn't seem to want to jump to the source file in another project, it just displays some metadata.

Visual Studio .NET 2003 seemed to handle this better. Is there an option or something to make VS 2005 behave like 2003 did?

You need to make sure you have a project reference.  To do this, bring up the Add Reference dialog, click the project tab, and select the project you want to reference (if you already have a reference to the built binary, you'll want to delete this reference first).

This problem also happens in VS2005 ASP.NET websites, when you have User Controls defined in subfolders. A common example is to have a "Controls" subfolder in the root directory of your website where you place User Controls. If you "Go to definition" of a public method for such a user control which is referenced from a page in the root directory, you get the metadata. There is no project to add as a reference in this case. Is there another way to get it to goto the user control code behind file rather than the metadata? Code navigation is a real pain without it.

Thanks a lot.

I agree, Campkevin. Did you find the answer to this? Im having the same problem and its a pain. Just another one of the "New and exiting features that will save you A LOT OF TIME" in Visual Studio 2005.

One issue I stumbled accross was when one developer actually included our DLL files into VSS. This changed the entire project structure to only use 1 version of the DLL, the one that was saved in VSS.
It was a great pain because no matter how many times you re-built, it woudl never let you use the new code.

We had to un-bind the solution and then just add the necisary files. So check to make sure you don't have your referenced DLL's / files stored in VSS, otherwise you will be running off of 1 version, and they won't be auto-updating.

This is a known bug in VS (http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/productfeedback/viewfeedback.aspx?feedbackid=f81226eb-ba2a-4d8d-8ef6-bf91d7e1e2d1) where VS really really wants to check in assemblies in the /bin folder.

The next time it happens to you just delete the DLL under /bin from VS, which will delete it from VSS. You don't need to unbind the solution.
