Development strategy for 2 beginning developers

How does one develop when you have 2-3 people working on a solution using SQL Server?

Specifically:

Where to store the central repository, is it normal/accepted to store this on a normal file server (which its only role is fileserver, no IIS/Database)?
Does one develop locally, so check out all files to local machine (My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Projects or WebSites) and run everything locally (on IIS or Cassini)?
In that case: do you each maintain config files separately?
Also in that case: how do you handle the SQL Server Database? Do you have only one on a server or do you also each maintain a local database (how does that work _generally_ with source control)?

We want to work this way (source controlled and with maximum flexibility) but due to lack of experience I want to make sure I 'get' this process before we set up our workflow like this.

Hi,

I'm currently involved in a large project with about 14-15 developers. We use Visual Source Safe to keep track of the files and history changes and use single check out policy. This means that only one person can check out a file at once.

We use 1 single database but have 1 person dedicated to maintain it. In smaller teams this could be a developer who also does this as an extra task. The stored procedures are also put in VSS as .sql files so it becomes easy for the DBA to obtain these and execute them on a test or production server.

Hey, thanks! I was planning to use SubVersion (because it's free and supposed to be pretty good).

But when you all check out, you have to whole thing on your local PC right? So exactly what files do you have to exclude from checking in? Is it ok to check in the solution file (.sln) and the project files (.csproj), and what about the web.config, can you check it in also?

Hi,

we check in everything but if I remember correctly only 2 developers, both backup for each other, have the necessary privileges to change the .config files. The project files and solution file (.sln) are all checked in. Everyone gets a latest version every day, thanks to a build script for MSBuild so we don't have to open vs.net 2005 for that each time, and after that we only need to open a certain project file depending on which part you're working. The total solution contains about 50 projects at the moment but the solution I use only contains 5 so it builds much quicker Smile [:)] .
