CSS Headaches and Support

Hey all,

Coming from a Windows Forms background, I was looking forward to doing some web development - and then the harsh reality of layout, bodges and hacks in HTML struck me - Layout on the Web sucks!

Sure there's CSS2 (woo!), but I find that the least intuitive latout system there is, except for tables, which I've been told not to use any way.

What i find most annoying is the lack of decent tool support. The web is essentially a visual medium, so why the heck do I have to hand code everything to make it work properly (and even then it's not a dead cert)? Visual Studio isn't the only culprit here, but the amount of times I've wanted to just be able to draw a nice flexi-layout, only to be totally screwed by the designer drives me nuts!

So, I guess the salient questions are (just to avoid this being a total rant :) ):

1.) Can we expect some enhanced layout and placement tools in a future update to VS 2005?
2.) What work is going on to provide a decent web layout system - how people have suffered this botch of a system for over 10 years is beyond me.

I guess we're masochists Wink . No honestly, delivering great looking webpages and make them look great in different browsers is a specialization on its own. On the other hand if you like to be amazed with what can be done with CSS take a look at http://www.csszengarden.com/.

Also there's a tool available, a plugin actually, for vs.net 2005: http://www.asp.net/sandbox/app_sandman.aspx?tabid=62. It's a beginning but I for sure hope that it'll be more polished in a next iteration and that it would be possible to add more css directly.
