now what? Everything seems to go fine on the portal starter kist install. Confirms connection to sqlexpress... then the above error message and a rollback to nothing... any suggestions?

There can be two possibilities.
1) Your OS is Window Server 2k/2k3. then the user name will be NT Authority\NT Service.

2) You havent installed .Net framework. because when the .Net framework is installed, it automatically creates MyServer\ASPNET user account. If you have already installed .Net framework, try to reinstall it.
