Multiple-row menus

I'm working with a menu control tied to my web.sitemap. I'm playing around with it, but can't get it to do what I want and wanted to know if anyone knew if the control can even do what I'm thinking. . .

I want the top level nodes horizontal across the top of my page. When you hover over a node that has child nodes, I'd like those nodes to be displayed horizontally under the parent nodes. (So there would be only two lines of menu items) Is this possible?

Currently, I have the parent nodes horizontally, but when you hover over a node with child nodes, the child nodes are displayed vertically.

Unfortunately, that is a limitation of the menu control. It's designed to be more like the menu on your web browser where the File, Edit, View, etc are horizontal but drop down vertically.

Hmm. Ok. What about doing something like this programatically? Like having a second menu and populate it using xpath from the web.sitemap or something? I'm going to start trying to do this, but if anyone knows for sure if it can or can't be done, please let me know. :)

Unfortunately, another limit of Menu is that it cannot be nested in the dynamic template of a menu. I think there is a TabStrip control in the IE webcontrols that's built on ASP.NET 1.1

I'd recommend not using the standard Menu control, instead use a custom control and style if via CSS. Grab the VBUG Navigation talk from http://ipona.com/samples - this contains a CssMenu control (with source), which works with the SiteMap and outputs UL and LI elements. There are two stylesheets to style this is a vertical or horizontal fly-out menus, but the stylesheets could be changed (submenu display inline rather than block for example). You can probably find an example and stylesheets from the links on http://css.maxdesign.com.au/listamatic/.
