Hi Everyone,

I've created a masterpage called site.master in placed it into a masterpages directory under the web root. No  whenever I create a aspx page, I choose the masterpage that I want to use which then places the following code into my aspx page:

MasterPageFile="~/masterpages/site.master"

If I want to change my masterpage to another masterpage, I have to edit every aspx page and point to the new masterpage.

Is there a way to do this from a single place (i.e. web.config), so that when I create an aspx I don't have to point to any masterpage (rather the web.congif will take care of this)?

A few suggestions:
  1. You could specify the master page in web.config, and remove the MasterPageFile attribute from the @Page directive.  Be aware that this will wipe out Intellisense, however.  See the Master Page Configuration section of this article Master Pages in ASP.NET 2.0.
  2. You might consider simply updating your master page, retaining the same name (while saving the original somewhere).
  3. Scott Guthrie blogged about one technique you can use with a BasePage to dynamically set the MasterPageFile at runtime: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2005/11/11/430382.aspx
  4. Another option is to create an HttpModule that will also set the master page at run time.  See Brock Allen's blog post: ASP.NET 2.0 and Themes and Master Pages.
