I wonder if I am missing something. Masterpages have worked well and I have used them on several sites. However, I am using the Corporate Template as a base for a site. It has an odd action when adding a new webform and referencing the master page. The masterpage has a main content and a couple of side column contents. When the new page is created it creates 3 content sections; doesn't name them or create the same as the masterpage and they do not include some of the content in the masterpage.

Am I missing an switch somewhere??

I have tested this. Yes, there are 3 ContentPlaceHolder in the master page. However when I add content page using the master page I doesn't find the problem as you described. Did you add the content page through right clicking menu of the master page. I think you can always manually change the ID of the content control in .ASPX code if you still have the problem.

I believe that is the one. Select File/New/Website and pick ASP.NET Corporate Web Site under My Templates. Let it build the site.

Now Add New Item, Web Form and Check Select master page and select the supplied AppMaster.master. Now take a look at the created page. It has three content holders. BUT, the AppMaster.master content is not in Content 2 or Content 3.

Now I am relating this to Dreamweaver Template method. In Dreamweaver all the content in the Template page (master page) in created in the child page except for selectable content in this case I would relate that to the content holders 1, 2 and 3. Apparently only "some" of the master page in duplicated. But what part?

The new page has the content holders 1,2 and 3 but not the contents. I would expect it would also have the existing contents if there were any that the master page had.
