Master page with menus

Hi,

i want to have menu to the left edge of my master page. On selecting a submenu, i want to load my aspx page to the right side of the menu.

I am very new to master pages. So, even if this seems to a simple one. please help me Smile

Hi,

What you try to accomplish is quite unusual. Usually you would apply master page to page at run time not vice versa. However you can dynamically load user controls on aspx page. You place PlaceHolder on your page and then based on querystring or something else load controls to that PlaceHolder. Any of these options will require full postback so you menu will disappear with page and load again.

Another way is to use frames (don't do it).

Bind the data to any of the Navigation Controls(TreeView or Menu Control ) when the page loads.

Write the following code in the page load of the Master Page.

if (!Page.IsPostBack)

{

SideMenu_Bind();

}

private void SideMenu_Bind()

{

// Get the Data from the DB or from the Xml file if you want to bind the menu dynamically

//Bind the data to the Menu

// Use Xml DataSource Control SiteMap for easy Implementation.

}

Well, they are usually considered bad because:

search engines have some difficulties indexing them;
user always sees only address of the first page, cannot easily write or send link to someone or bookmark it;
it is harder to maintain for developer.

I see one benefit as well:

Less Internet traffic and faster page load. Since you load one frame only you do not have to load header, menu, side bars etc every time, which means that you are transferring less data between server and user computer.

These days I usually create Master page or two and add to it Menu.ascx which has links to other pages. After that I just add pages and modify Menu.ascx if I add, remove or move pages.

Firstly, the application which i am currently working is a intranet one. So, there is no search engine.

Between, can you please explain me more briefly about your approach.

Hi,

Do you want the page donot postback when you click on the menu items?

In this forum, there is an old thread that discussed this problem: http://forums.asp.net/t/1146505.aspx. You can refer it.

You can use iframe to prevent the entire page postback instead of master page.
