It seems to me if I were to have a site as a frameset (typical top frame and then a left menu and a body frame), that I really don't need the use of a master page?  I just did a site using master pages and LOVE it...but just wondering what the use would be if I had a frameset.  Thoughts on this?

I've just done a report as part of a dissertation on a comparison of frames and master pages. Some of the disadvantages of frames are:

Formatting

Frames can be handled differently by different browsers. Some don't handle them very well at all hence the need to add the NOFRAMES tag into your HTML code. Plus you get the hideous scrollbars that can appear at different resolutions.

Search Engines

Search engines can struggle with frame based web sites. The main page is usually just a set of pointers to other pages that fit into the frameset. Hence any content is usually overlooked.

Bookmarking and Navigation

When bookmarking a web page in a frameset, you will end up with either the main frameset being bookmarked - which means that any content pages will be forgotten - so when you revisit you will be taken back to the main page, or you can bookmark the content page and lose all the navigation controls of the website. Printing can be a problem as you don't whether it will print the content, or the navigation controls as well.

 

The main thing is that frames are messy to work with, each webpage may consist of many html pages (a navigation frame, header, a content frame etc). A webpage that inherits a Master page exists as just one page (navigation controls, headers, footers, content etc) so it is easier to bookmark, print, site submit etc.

Thank you for this information.  I agree with you 100% on all this (hadn't thought about bookmarking and search engines though).  The only question I have then is what about the wonders of vertical scrolling.  In the non-frameset view, you lose your navigation structure.  Any way around that other than the fixed bod on the page with it's own scrollbar (which I personally cannot stand)?

While we're on the topic, I don't suppose there's any way to use Master Pages to create a sizable left frame (I mean "sizable" as a verb here, like in the MSDN 2 site where you can resize the left pane in the browser).
