 I am in a puzzle about why we got the different result with the same the code? I want to explain my result to you:

Because in your content page, the Content's  ContentPlaceHolderID="ContentPlaceHolder1", the ContentPlaceHolder control is where you want your Default.aspx to place their content. So, the content of the master page will covered

 Hi,

In your code you used  ContentPlaceHolder control and Content control , these two controls are new in the asp.net 2.0, there are no in the earlier version. I think it may be the incorrect path about referring masterpage file .

 About the more information of masterpage, you could reference the below link.
