asp:menu - Can you change popout to go left instead of right?10/3/2007 10:36:40 AM

0/0

How is it that this is not obviously manageable? I have been scratching my head for two days now trying to working this one out.

I am using the asp:menu control in Visual Web Developer, my site design requires the menu to be aligned right, and I see absolutely no reason why I shouldn't be able to do that.

There are three tiers within this menu so naturally there are popouts. By default these pop out to the right of the menu container, But as the layout is right aligned the popouts are not displayed, presumably because the container is fixed width.

 Regardless of this I want the first tier by default to popout to the left of the menu. If I was doing this old skool using lists and css I would just put a negative margin on the popout class but I cannot seem to find anywhere to do this with the asp:menu.

So any tips and pointers out there??????????

Interesting problem...not sure if this is the *best* way to do it, but it'll work:

Click your menu-control's smart tab, and change the Views drop down list to Dynamic from Static.

Then play with the DynamicHorizontalOffset property of the menu, but set it to a negative number (like -100 for example). You'll see when you run the page that the sub menu items will display on the left and not the right.

You can also play with the Dynamic Vertical Offset property as well.

Not sure how to move the default arrow image though, but at least this is a start.

Hi,

Base on your description, do you want the menu popout from the right to left?

You can put the menu control in a div, and set the div's dir is rtl.

Like below:

 <div dir="rtl" style="width: 100px; height: 100px">
        <asp:Menu ID="Menu1" runat="server" OnMenuItemClick="Menu1_MenuItemClick" DataSourceID="SiteMapDataSource1">
        </asp:Menu>
        </div>
Hope it helps.

 interesting suggestions both of them.

 In reverse response,

The dir element was deprecated in HTML 4.01.

The dir element is not supported in XHTML 1.0 Strict DTD.

 So I wouldn't be keen to go in that direction.

Changing the dynamic offset does indeed allow you to apply a negative number but of course doesn't allow for varying string lengths for the contained links. I suppose I could apply fixed widths to the options so I may well continue to play with that method, the graphic side of things isn't too much of a concern as you can just re-draw the gif and that is also easily positioned.

Appreciate the advice and will report back with my experimentation.

Ahhhh fantastique!!!

 Using the dynamic offset and then setting the dynamicitem style to a fixed width has enabled to get a really nice looking format.

 Thank you for the excellent info on this particular control I will certainly remember to revisit regularly, glad I found this place!
