Transparent menus -- not possible?

I want to use a single image as the background for my whole TabStrip but I can't seem to make the individual tabs transparent via CSS styles. I don't want any background colors for the tabs, but setting the tabs to transparent (i.e. in the tab styles use background-color: transparent) didn't work.

I tried setting a background-image at the TabStrip CssClass but that had no effect. Other style attributes work, like border, but not background-image.

I also tried this..

In my style sheet:

.MyTabStrip
{
  display: inline;
  width: 690px;
  height: 35px;
  background-image: url(./images/toolbar_background.jpg);
}

In my web page:

<div class="MyTabStrip">
<ie:TabStrip  ...>
...
</id:TabStrip>
</div>

But the background image of the DIV does not show through the TabStrip because the tabs are displayed with solid color backgrounds. Is there any way to do this?
