This is the forum space we have created for the GotCommunityNet project. Welcome!

As the threads start to build we will be keeping tabs on the base subjects. As enough interest builds in each subject we will add a new sub-forum in support of this general forum.

I just received word that an email list has been granted for our use as well. If you prefer email based forums this would be the place for you. Note however that there is no synchronization between the 2 forums.

Well. I am very curious, but:

Focus on a single language sounds good, but will it be c# ? ? ?

What will happen to CSK and when ?

Can't find no info yet about that here.

Maybe it is not for me to post here.

GotCommunityNet uses C#. However, in the future, you will be able to add <b>new modules</> in the .NET language of your choice.

The main GCN engine will remain a C# compiled set of assemblies. When creating a new module you will reference the main assemblies then write what you need in that module (in the language of your choice), compile it and it will run.

Hope that makes sense!

Thanks.

Can you tell me: Will it be easier to translate than the former CSK ?
It is easier to be english in this open source world. I have to translate it all, including a lot code behind, to danish again.

the 1.1 release is about the same as 1.0 in terms translations.

I've asked for volunteers on the GCN workspace to head up localization. If anyone is up to that task, then localization and translation improvments may make it's way into 2.0.

Thanks. I have to ask more questions:

Can the "GCN" be used/modified without VS ?

Can you say that the GotCommunityNet is for CommunityStarterKit what DotNetNuke is for PortalStarterKit ?

Yes, you can use and modify it without VS.NET, but you will have to manually build the app yourself. We don't provide (yet) any command line build tools or assistance, though it shouldn't be too difficult to handle this yourself.

DotNetNuke is an evolution of IBuySpy. GCN is an evolution of the CSK. While we aren't as far evolved as DotNetNuke is from it's ancestor, we hope to eventually take GCN there.

Thanks Stephen.

The app must be the BuildAll.bat ? and you have to just change something in that to be able to compile ?

Can you or anyone here give an advice in general.
I think many others are considering to go with the GotCommunityNet OR stay maybe more safe on the CSK.
Is GotCommunityNet mostly reccommended for developers than designers ?
Important to make the right choice.

I have a choice to make: Stay with VBCSK or or get on this train.

Investing in VS to be able to translate the code behind!?

Could someone bring some enlightenment to my question?

Also I think it will be General information to many others.

Many of the changes being sought within GCN involve making things much more pluggable. This will make it easier for developers, certainly, but I think the greatest benefit will be seen by site admin.

For example, it's desireable to be able to simply drop a module dll into a directory, restart the app, and have the module be usable, database configuration and all.

For that matter, database configuration is being looked at for analogous changes. Changes to skinning are also being considered.

As far as safety, GCN's first release should be a snapshot of CSK, brought up-to-date with bug fixes. We wanted a solid base before we started re-architecting things. I would expect modules written for CSK would have to be rewritten once the new architectures are brought into play.

"GCN's first release should be a snapshot of CSK, brought up-to-date with bug fixes."

Does the bug fixes include a performance fix ?

Yes. The documentation says about bug fixes:

CSK stored procedures had performance issues that caused page loads times to go up drastically when there is more than 1000 content items. This has been fixed.
