Which Windows Server 2003 platform is best7/26/2005 9:10:13 PM

0/0

I am setting up a web server and am integrating the dotnetnuke platform for use with the server. I am trying to determin which Windows Server 2003 platform would be best to work with dotnetnuke...Windows Server 2003 Standard, Enterprise, Web, SMB, etc. I have used all of the above, but would like a little advice from those that have went before me.

Web Edition, seems like it might be a good bet, but it having a "control panel" built in may interfere with a control panel such as C-Panel or H-Sphere.

In which case I think that maybe just Standard Edition may be the best choice...

Any help greatly appreciated!

Enterprise is only worth the price if you need to do load-balancing.  We also looked at the Web version, but there were to many features disabled (Only supports running under 1 CPU and I think limited to memory that can be in machine) for it to work with all our applications. If it has all the features you need, then I'd say save the money and use the web version, otherwise standard works for most IIS servers.

All have their places in the scheme of things, and it really depends on what you're intending to do.  Enterprise is needed for clustering.  Web won't run SQL Server (you'd use a back end SQL). SBS has limitations in number of users and the inability to join other domains, but includes ISA, SQL and Exchange so your licensing is easier/cheaper.

Thanks guys you were an excelete help!

I also checked out Microsoft's version comparison, which also helped out. Anyone else who's lookin can check it out at: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/evaluation/features/compareeditions.mspx

For anyone who's wondering, I decided to go with Server 2003 Standard Edition. It appeared to have everything that I need to do what I want to do. Enterprise edition seemed to be overkill for the box that I am putting it on, although it does have a few features that would be nice...
