Think my database got corrupted...9/25/2004 11:53:54 PM

Help??

Couple of weird things started happening on my site. I've installed several modules from various sources over the last four months and haven't had any problem. But I did have some problems with a couple of modules though I'm not sure if they were the problem. At any rate, I started having problems with my DNN site when one day...the site just decided to delete my DeskTopModules directory. I have no idea why! It just did. Database was fine and after installing the modules all over again - the content came up as it should have.

The only problem was that there were a couple modules on various pages that were showing up on the page and throwing load errors. They were completely empty (just like module shells) and I wasn't able to delete them. I deleted the entire tab they were on, however, and that seemed to resolve it. But then the other day I was adding a new tab to my site and all of the sudden one of these "stray" empty modules just popped up on the page and threw a load error. I have no idea how it got there. So I deleted the tab BUT I can't delete the tab from the recycle bin.

Now just today I purchased a module and put it up on a tab. All seems to work fine until on a page refresh I get the following error:

A critical error has occurred.
The viewstate is invalid for this page and might be corrupted.

My hunch is that I need to manually go into the database and do something. But I have no SQL experience really and am not sure how to begin or what to look for. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I've put a lot of work into this site but it's becoming painfully obvious that it's on it's way to crashing... Thanks very much for any help.

I just went back to my page and it doesn't show that critical error anymore. But still there is something not right. I downloaded MSDE 2000 because I'm hoping that will help me take a look into the SQL database? I really have no concept though. I've been using Access 2003 databases in my custom module and that makes sense to me. One file and it contains rows and columns with data in it. But what is the SQL database that DNN uses? Is it the list of 00.00.000.000 files in the DataProviders/SQLProvider directory? Is there a way I can open up the DNN database and see tables/rows/columns with tabid, moduleid, and information for each module that has somehow altered the database? Thanks for any help.

The error message "The viewstate is invalid for this page and might be corrupted" has nothing to do with your database. Viewstate is maintained in ASP.NET using a string of bytes in a hidden element, and what the error is telling you is that a navigation action has sent you to a different page then the viewstate is for.

FYI: As far as the "blank modules" you are reporting, quite a few modules out there don't support Microsoft Access. Make sure you read the system requirements to make sure they are not sql server only.

In short, it's probably a bug in the module you bought - contact the author.

Thanks for the response.

My site uses SQL and not Access. The only Access databases I use are with a couple custom modules that I made. So the blank modules shouldn't have anything to do with Access databases.

I do think you're right about it being a bug in a third party module though I really don't know which one.

Try logging in as host and unticking the content checkbox. This should display just the module headings and not the content of the module. You can then delete or investigate the modules without any errors gettting in the way.

Excellent. I'll try that. Thanks.
