I am trying to get DNN 3.22 up and running on a windows based webhost.

I created the virtual directory and have set the permissions like they needed to be set by the examples in the docs.

I have created a mysql database since my provider does not use MSsql on their servers.

the host has .net framework 1.1.4 installed.

I uploaded all the files to the host and when I attempt to do the install I get a wonderful error message that states

Description: An error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request. Please review the specific error details below and modify your configuration file appropriately.

Parser Error Message: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.

since I am a complete newbie to DNN this is starting to drive me crazy...

have I missed a step or 4 along the way???

any help would be greatly appreciated in this

Look at the error message.  It's a good bet you missed this step.

the host I am using has plesk 7.5 as the control panel.

I went into the web directory section and created the virtual directory and told it to "create application"

and it has read/write access with both scripts and executables having access.

I am now getting a

even though I have the custom errors turned off in the asp.net config section and the authentication set to forms in the same section.

I dont know what I am doing wrong on this since the instructions are pretty clear about how stuff should work....

Did you edit the web.config file to the text mentioned in the error?  Have you tried a Hello World app in that folder?

well after the suggested edit of the web.config I was able to get past that issue....

I do still have a small problem of access since my host is paranoid and wont allow me to change permissions of file... asked them to allow write access so I can finish the install...

since I have to ask them for permission changes what directories need to have what permissions at a minimum.... or do I just need to leave the entire application to have write permission....

I appreciate all the help on this...

sorry about sounding like to much of a noob

well after all the help from the people here I am almost done installing DNN for the first time.

its actually finished sending me errors and is actually trying to install the application - yes all this hassle was just getting to that point.

the last issue I am running into is it doesnt like my database connect string and I didnt know if I needed to alter the string in anyway to reflect I am using PHPwebAdmin and  Mysql 4.1. instead of a microsoft sql provider?
