I'm new to web developing and just started using DNN. I have the basic starter page up and running with a few minor modifications on my local machine at work. I wanted to see if anyone else could access the site so I copied the http address from my mahcine and just changed the localhost to my machine name: ie: http://mypc/website/dotnetnuke/default.aspx. I can't open the site on another machine in the same domain. How do I access the site from another machine?

 

Also, once I do get the intranet site finished the way I would like, how do I get others to see the site without needing my machine name?

Did you add a portal alias for the name you want the computer accessed by?  To access your machine, other users only need the portal alias that is accessible to your public interface.......like http://domain_name or whatever you use for public access.

I've worked in an environment where all I had to do previously to get a site running was to ftp files to the intranet webserver. Since I am developing the test site on my local machine would I need to edit someone's host file to redirect their machine to my testing machine's ip address? I added a new portal alias www.testingsite.com, but how does the portal alias work on my machine since it is not the primary web server?

 

Also, once I am happy with the site, how do I go about getting it installed on another server? Is there any documentation for this?

Do a search on portal alias.  You need to understand how DNN works.  As far as deployment, there are too many unknown variables to tell you that explicitly.  You said you are on an intranet.....are you using VS or the web developer.....which has a build feature AND a publish feature AND a copy website feature. Also you would have to take into account the location of the database server.  I assume that your intranet server and development machine are different....If you are using one of the VS tools, just build the site on the intranet server, which is what I did.  Then you create your content on the intranet server. I personally don't put content on the development machine.....I just use it for testing modules before deploying them to the live server.

I tried setting up the portal alias, but still no luck. I tried creating a new portal using a different template, which automatically asks for an alias, and I am getting a page cannot be displayed error. if I hit refresh the page reloads and I can see the new portal listed in the host/portal menu. If I click on the alias link, it attempts to load the page and after about 2-3 secs I get a page cannot be displayed message. If I click on the link for the original alias (default portal ) it loads the site fine. If I click on the alias that I manualled added for the default portal I get the same page cannot be displayed error.

 

Any other ideas?

I got the new alias for the default site to work. I just neededto call my alias machinename/website/dotnetnuke. Now the problem is getting an alias to work for any other portals on the webserver. What am I supposed to use as an alias for the other portals, because  machinename/website/dotnetnuke/newPortalName doesn't work?

I have only two alias for my network server.........one is http://machine_name  This is the address I use internally........the other is the child domain name.  http:/child_domain_name  This is my public alias.....the one that is accessible thru my public IP address and resolves publicly via DNS.  I do not use the public alias internally. The website is located in the webserver root........which is why I do not need http://machine_name\dir_1\subdir_1 and so on.  If you have such a complex path, then you probably should consider creating a virual dirctory altho' the other should work fine.
