Please help a newbie out...10/28/2005 5:55:33 AM

I am using GoDaddy on a shared hosting plan.  I have 1 of each setup, MySql, Access and SQL Server databases.  Right now I have DNN 3.1.0 running and working with no problems.  I am working on trying to integrate some forum software...maybe PHPBB.  My question is this...

Is it possible to have the DNN modules that create user accounts and the forum software to pull from the same database on GoDaddy?

For instance, if someone registers with my DNN site, can the forum software use the same registration credentials?

Am I making any sense?  Any help is appreciated.

Instead of PHPBB why not look at either the core forum discussions module or a third party one like ActiveForums (http://www.activemodules.com/) .  Both of these are DNN modules so they plug straight in and work with the DNN user system so you don't need to worry about integration.

The other pet is that PHPBB uses PHP as the server side language so you have to make sure that is installed on your server in addition to .NET

I tried this once before but I can't seem to get the forums to match my portal container skins, it looks goofy when they don't match...I don't understand the CSS stuff at all.

Can you tell me how to make the DNN module forums match the rest of my site?

To get the things to match you will need to learn CSS.

At a very basic level all CSS does it replace the specific formatting that was in the page with a 'tag' and define the formatting in a seperate CSS file.  The 'tags' can redefine built in HTML items like '<H1>' or apply a style (like MS Word) using the 'class="Normal"' as an example.  This means when you want to change the look you just go to the CSS file change it there and not have to do a search and replace throughout a site.  This makes it ideal for skinning.

To make things look the same you have to see the styles the forums use and match them to the container styles you want.  In a lot of cases the styles will be in the documentation which makes this a bit easier.

With PHPBB you would have to the same thing.

Sorry to drag an old topic up.

I have noticed that there are a few topics out there with questions regarding phpbb and DNN.

I have a dilemma, I run a very successful phpbb Music forum with almost 30,000 registered users and I am currently developing the main music site in DNN. I would like the 30,000 users on my forum be able to log in to my DNN portal. I understand that this is most probably a huge task, but I am trying to think of a ways to make it possible.

I believe that I would have to decrypt the passwords from the mysql DB for starters and then insert the data into the DNN sql DB. Is it possible for only insert Username, Email address and password into DNN. Maybe duplicating the Username from phpbb as the first and last name in DNN?.

Would it be possible for a DLL to be created that will keep both Databases in Sync?

Hopefully someone will say that this is "do-able" then I can start to look at getting the resources to make a start.
