hi
apologies for putting this thread again.i hope the moderator is annoyed with my posting it again. i was looking for advice which can help me.

i m in process of installing dnn...i m held up as i dont have the vs2003 cd.(i will be proceeding soon).but b4 i do all this i wanted to have a generic guidance. i am told to use dnn for my intranet website. i ve to understand DNN first to actually use it.

can someone explain me...
1.wil using dnn solve my purpose. what is DNN...does the DNN site is www.dotnetnuke.com (i mean when i run the DNN project then wil the 1st page be like www.dotnetnuke.com ?)
2. i downloaded DNN .. and i unzipped i see a lot of modules in it.what does this mean? if i dont want to use any one module then i just remove that???

3.are there any documentations available for DNN? something like whitepapers.where i can know what modules are there in the project,what exaclty is this project doing? what is the DB structure , tables,etc.

You shouldn't need the VS CD to install DNN.  Is there a problem you're having that you can describe so we can offer suggestions?

I don't know what your purpose is, but I suspect that if you don't know what DNN is or does then the answer is no.  DNN is a web portal.  You can use it to build websites that do many things, through the use of modules.  Some are included, others are available separately.  You don't need to know how to code to use DNN, but if you want modules that don't exist you may need to create them yourself.  The first page will be similar to dotnetnuke.com's page, though not the same.

If you don't know what DNN is, then you can't decide that you don't want something.  Install it first, test it, play with it, remove and reinstall it a few times.  Then decide.

The documentation is in the documentation folder.

Although looking at the zip file when you first download DNN can be quite daunting, it is relatively easy to work with.

I use DNN on or company intranet site and it works very well. With the templates, skins, and multiple portals, it is very easy to set up a site for each department..

u say i dont need the VS cd for it??? then what do i do with the code that i downloaded . i want to see the source of DNN so that i can learn and debug.

ALos...when i try to open the sln file i cannot do so. as i analysed that i need vs.2003 for dnn 3>
correct me if i am wrong. really appreciate ur response.

To use DNN you don't need to look at or modify the code.  If you do wish to open the code, then VS2003 is the best choice for the job.

DNN is a portal.  You don't need to modify code or write any code to use it.  You make all your changes through the DNN and module interfaces.

Have you installed it?  Have you read the first page that comes up when you do?  The one that tells you how to log into the portal?  Have you clicked on the help menus?  Have you read the documentation?  It's not rocket science, but it does require you to install it before you can do anything.

Unzip it.  Open the documentation folder, in the public folder under that read the installation instructions.  Do it now, we'll wait....

Can't find the documentation?  Okay, go back and download the installation file with documentation.  The other one you didn't choose on the download page.  When it's downloaded, unzip it and find the documentation in that one and read it.  We'll wait again...

Okay, now that you've read the installation instructions, follow them.  If you get stuck, ask more questions here or use the Forums search feature to find the answers.

Then you should feel welcome to.  You can use any text editor, any of the various code editors or even Visual Studio.  After you've opened it, changed a few things and nothing works, delete everything, remove the installation folders, delete the database and start over.  That's part of the learning process.  If you would rather not be frustrated, don't do this until you have experimented with the portal itself for a while.  And yes, there's more documentation that covers some of the programming issues.

If you're hoping to be able to pop up VS2003, load up DNN, and spend a couple days figuring out the deep dark internals, then you're in for shock - for most people DNN is hard enough to get loaded into VS as it is.

You could use notepad to view the source as well.

If you're wanting to know how DNN works, I would say it would be better, at least at the beginning, to focus on concepts as opposed to implementations.  Don't worry about what is going on under the hood and just focus on what is going on.  The best way to do that, I think, would be to start using a copy of DNN and playing around with it.  Once you have an idea about how to use DNN, then take a look at some of the module source code.  Once you've got that all figured out, if you're really feeling hard-core (Smile [:)]) then kick of VS and start tearing through the core code.
