I just installed the newest DNN to a GoDaddy account exactly as the tutorial on here shows. Now I check on the DB and all the tables have been created, no errors in setup, and everything seemed fine. But now when I try to go to the main default.aspx file I just get a red caution sign and "An error has occured. An error has occured." And the address in the address bars goes to: .../Default.aspx?tabid=36&error=The+root+element+is+missing.&content=0

Any help would be great, I'm sure it's something fairly simple!

Thats an xml error. Please check you have a web.config file, and that it's well formed i.e. all tags have closing tags. Chances are you've deleted an angle bracket by mistake. You can take a copy of your web.config file, and rename it to web.xml, and then open it in Internet explorer, and it'll give you a quick view of it, and hopefully show where you've made the error.

just tried that and took a clean web.config file and tried 3 more times and still the same error

also just edit permissions and that still didn't fix it
