Could not connect to database: Access DataProvider4/14/2004 10:30:46 AM

0/0

Hi all,

I'm having problems and don't know how to fix things.
I did a dotnetnuke install at our network. The system administrator set everything up (I don't have these rights) and we went well.
Because I don't want to test within the same environment as people are working, I wanted to setup a second installation of DNN. So I've asked my system administrator to setup directories the same way he did before, but with another name than dotnetnuke.
He created some interesting structure (with other names for the directories then naming the virtual path etc.) but I found out how to make sure DNN is searching for the right location for the database. (DNN is installed within wwwroot\mapname and the dir providers is located at wwwroot\mapname\providers, but within web.config I have to tell DNN to go to \..\mapname\providers\dataproviders\accessprovider\ or something like that, because the virtual directory is set at wwwroot/othermapname which is linked to the directory mapname).

I thought this wouldn't be the problem, but maybe it is.

The error I get is:

The Assembly Version ( [ASSEMBLYVERSION] ) does not match the Database Version ( [DATABASEVERSION] )

ERROR: Could not connect to database.

Could not find file 'R:\wwwroot\mapname\Providers\DataProviders\AccessDataProvider\DotNetNuke.mdb.resources'.

DNN is searching at the right place, but there isn't a dotnetnuke.mdb.resources yet. Because it's the first time I connect to the site, this file has to be created.
So I thought this could be a permission error. Our system administrator says all the settings are the same for the last installation as this time, so he doesn't believe it's permission.

I thought I could end the discussion by creating the dotnetnuke.mdb by myself, but I don't want to use the dotnetnuke.mdb from the testlocation, because that one is full with information and new modules. Does anyone know what to enter into template.mdb to get it up and running as dotnetnuke.mdb? Do I have to create an extra portal next to the default one or something?

Thanx in advance
yarko

For Access database, this should be really, really easy - so I suspect you are just doing too much...

All this error is saying is that you are not connecting to the database...

Most people have "trouble" because they want SQL-Server database, and mistakenly (without doing anything) create a DNN using the Access database. That's the default, and it seems to always "just work" (when people forget to change the defaultProvider in their web.config).

If you created a virtual directory, and pointed it to your DNN installation - and if you set permissions on that directory... then you should be up and running...

So - maybe you could be more specific about what you did before getting this error (you mention "within web.config I have to tell DNN to go to..." - you shouldn't need to do anything for using an Access data provider.

Let's find out what you did, maybe then help will come. I'm confident it's something simple.

If you look in your web.config, you will see that the database filename that will be created for an Access instance will be:

databaseFilename = "DotNetNuke.resources"

It is created using "Template.mdb.resources" in your (and you should leave this reference looking like this in your web.config!) ~\Providers\DataProviders\AccessDataProvider\ directory.

I'm wondering why the error mentioned Dotnetnuke.mdb.resources....

You unzipped your DNN distribution in "R:\wwwroot\mapname" ???? Really?

Thanx a lot !

Changing the root to the database back to ~\providers etc. was the missing link.
I changed it the first time, because it wasn't working and I was getting an error about the location. Don't understand why it's working now (have to ask system administrator if he changed anything yesterday when I wasn't here), but it works!

The error is mentioning dotnetnuke.mdb.resources and that was correct, it's also the databasefilename within web.config Didn't change anything about that. The template file is also called template.mdb.resources

At least, within the version I'm using (2.0.3)
